About The Basin Community House

The Basin Community House Inc is situated at the foot of The Dandenong Ranges
in a picturesque semi-rural setting, adjacent to The Basin Primary School.

The community of The Basin has a very distinct local identity, with a strong community focus. The Basin
Community House Inc is a not for profit organisation that is committed to providing quality,
relevant and accountable services to the community.

The House provides a diverse range of programs and services in an informal, supportive and welcoming environment.
The programs vary each term and focus on the changing needs of the community.

These include:

  • adult education (nationally recognised accredited vocational and further education courses)

  • recreational courses

  • support groups

The Basin Community House Inc seeks to be an organisation that is available for all people to use, which enhances the quality of their lives, improves their sense of belonging and connection to their local community.

We have a team of qualified and experienced staff and sessional tutors that deliver our programs. The Basin Community House Inc is supported by a dedicated group of volunteers who help look after reception and administration. The commitment, enthusiasm and loyalty of the volunteers, Committee of Management, staff and tutors are the “priceless” factor that makes our Community House “Something Special”.

Our Statement of Purpose

In a supportive and inclusive environment we offer a diverse range of volunteering, community development and social programs to encourage residents to participate in active community life.

Adult Education in Community Houses

Community Houses, sometimes known as Neighbourhood Houses or Learning Centres, originated in the mid 1970’s as a response to the community’s need for a meeting place to break down isolation, a place to share resources and a place to learn new skills. The number of Houses grew rapidly in the 1970s and 1980s to over 200 in Melbourne and over 300 in Victoria alone. Currently there are more community houses than McDonalds stores in Victoria (2012).

Community Houses aim to increase the life opportunities of their local communities by providing education, support, childcare, sharing of resources and access to networks in a warm and caring environment.

We have three class/meeting rooms (which are available for hire), a computer room with twelve training computers and two kitchen areas. There is a ramp for disabled access and a toilet accessible to wheelchairs.

Limited onsite parking is available in the car park and there is a disabled parking space. Further parking is available opposite the Community House, in Goodwin Street, or Basin Court or in The Basin Primary school car park (100m down Mountain Highway towards Liverpool Road).

Please refer to the room and hall hire page for further details.

The Basin Community House is a proud member of the Knox Learning Alliance.
